Over the years there have been some famous fictional ducks that we have come to love in books, movies, television and song. Two wonderful stories about ducks are Hans Christian Andersen’s The Ugly Duckling and The Tale of Jemima Puddle Duck by Beatrix Potter.
The Ugly Duckling was first published in 1843 and tells the story of a little duckling who is abused by his farmyard neighbors because he is ugly. Eventually, as he matures, he turns into a graceful swan, the most beautiful bird of them all. The much loved story has seen many adaptations including the 1931 black and white short animated movie, The Ugly Duckling and then another short movie in 1939 made in Technicolor. Jemima Puddle Duck was first published in 1908 about a farmyard duck and a fox who planned to eat her. Like all Potter’s books, The Tale of Jemima Puddle Duck is beautifully illustrated and became one of her most popular books.
One of the most recognized fictional ducks of all time is Walt Disney’s Donald Duck. Donald Fauntleroy Duck is a white anthropomorphic duck who has a yellow-orange bill, legs and feet and usually wears a sailor shirt cap and red bow tie. Unusually he doesn’t wear trousers unless he goes swimming. It was in 1934 that Donald Duck made his debit in the movie, The Little Wise Hen and since then he has made numerous appearances in movies, television series and video games.
Let’s not forget Warner Brother’s animated cartoon character, Daffy Duck. Daffy was the best friend and rival of Bugs Bunny and the two of them were always trying to outdo each other. Daffy Duck was appeared in 1937 in Porky’s Duck Hunt. Daffy was voiced by Mel Blanc who gave him the catchphrase “you’re desthpicable”. For an old duck, Daffy is still very much living and has made cameo roles in the 1988 movie, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Space Jam (1996) and larger roles in some recent Looney Tunes movies and series.
If your little one loves ducks, then make sure that they do not miss out on the fun at Easter or Halloween by dressing them in one of these adorable duck costumes. They are guaranteed to go absolutely quackers with enjoyment.
